- Group III base oil is produced using a hydro-processing method to clean crude oil. The process is deeper and operates at higher temperature and pressure compared to Group II base oil production. The resulting base oil is pure, colorless, and has a viscosity index (VI) above 120. Group III base oil has higher oxidation resistance than Group I and Group II base oils.
- Group III base oil has a hydrocarbon content of >90%, sulfur <0.03%, and a viscosity index above 120. It is sometimes classified as synthetic oil and is becoming increasingly popular as a substitute for Group II base oil. Group III base oil is more expensive than Group I and Group II base oils.
- Group III base oil is used in the production of engine oils with SAE viscosity grades of 5W-XX or 0W-XX, mostly for high-speed gasoline engines in light trucks and cars. It is risky to use low viscosity SAE 0W-XX due to potential boundary lubricity issues causing component wear. SAE 5W-XX is commonly recommended by OEMs. Its low dynamic viscosity and high viscosity index allow manufacturers to blend Group III base oil into Group I to improve oxidative stability and prevent vaporization in engine oil production.
